Should I lie about my dates of employment on my resume?

Davina David: Sure go ahead and get fired as soon as they find out you lied.

Shaun Rapkowicz: Absolutely not. Why start out a job by lying to them? If you have a year long gap in your employment history, simply explain why you have it.

Cody Petrulis: If you lie, be prepared to be fired the day your new employer finds out. It will throw everything on your resume into doubt. And a record of having been fired will follow you everywhere.Dumb idea.Good luck!...Show more

Rick Duchane: yes you should, however be prepaired because they may ask you about them and you need to memorize your answers

Tory Clapper: Absolutely not. If they catch you, you will be fired and you also risk being sued for fraud and perjury. Read that statement right above a signature area on an application. Just be honest that you didn't work for 1 year.

Porfirio Cahall: no u sud not lie,cos by chance wen the company checks the details and finds out the truth u will be fired! .

Benny Stehno: You know it's wrong, yet you have to ask if it's OK?And you'll do it if a bunch of anonymous strangers tell you it's OK?I hope your not applying for a job for me.Pick up any resume advice book. It will describe how to honestly handle that question about the gap in your resume....Show more

Loriann Carrigan: Have you heard of 'typo' ?

Elbert Donatelli: Even with that I don't think you should lie because that can be grounds for dismissal. Just tell the truth.

Dexter Dicostanzo: It depends on where you are going to apply for the job. If it seems like a place that doesn't check references then go ahead and lie. Its not like your hurting anybody. But if its a super strict company just put the truth. Maybe you can make two resumes.

Particia Thorton: If you don't want a job, then sure knock yourself out. Lie all you want.

Marcelle Vanlith: No do not lie, I am in a position at my work where I have to do employment checks, and I ! do check everything. So if you tell the truth about being unem! ployed it would be easier than lying and having them find out and you not getting hired. (trust me they do find out), just tell the truth and when you get the interview just explain why... lots easier

Davis Zou: if you lie and its caught you can/ will be dismissed....better jsut to tell the truth...you know like your mom always told you

Maritza Ebanks: Don't lie because the second they find you will be fired no matter how valuable you are to the company. Don't ever forget that in the work world YOU ARE REPLACEABLE.

Marcel Then: Leave the gap in time and explain that you were doing something else like volunteering or something to give you extra brownie points. They do check your history, but it wouldn't really be that bad to tell the truth. If you get caught lying they won't hire you at all. If you tell the truth they give you some credit at least and consideration.

Cliff Tyre: try it. see what'll happen.

Mickey Isle: do not alter the dates. Adj! usting the dates is mendacity and while they call your previous employers they'll discover out the dates besides and then prob not hire you considering you lied.

Raymundo Kyser: Depends what you did in that gap of a year and how high a position you're going for.On the whole I'd say, do not lie but be liberal with the truth and hell you can always say it was a typo.In the mean time become so good at your job that they will not want to sack you if they ever find out.In this case a small lie may bring big rewards and what the mind does know, cannot hurt it....Show more

Lucille Saetteurn: no

Jorge Gerrero: Uhhh there's no reason to lie. If you didn't work, you didn't work... no big deal. People take time off from working for plenty of different reasons. They won't deny you a job that you are qualified for just because you took a year off work. And if they do, you shouldn't want to work for people like that anyway

Sena Highman: sure go for it

Alden ! Soldano: No, you shouldn't.

Porfirio Cahall: no don't lie about y! our work dates, just put down you were independently working.

George Dingeldein: No, you should not..! Reason?Every employer need specific people. If you will lie and be selected then the employer will expect more than you have. If you will tell the trueth then the employer will give you right kind of job as well as opportunity to come up.

Indira Wassell: No for 2 reasons:1) They may find out, and almost always at the worst time. Then you are fired.2) You will worry about them finding out, and this will affect your job performance.

Collin Pelfrey: lie but you better make sure your credit it good since they check that these days.

Ewa Homrich: No, because it is just to easy to get caught. Just come up with a good answer to this question: "Why do you have this one year gap in employment?" There are a lot of good reasons to have a gap.

Lou Rought: why dont you list your employment only by year, instead of by year and month? that way the gap doesnt! look as big.example:job 1: 1999-2001job 2: 2002-present...Show more

Ollie Hamiel: NEVER LIE ON YOUR RESUMEThey can do background checks that will show your date of employment - as the government tracks your W-2 forms. It doesn't matter if your previous employer doens't answer his phone. If you lie on your resume, most likely you will not get the job... Just have a good answer about what you did for that year... being unemployed doesn't make you unmarketable, it is a tough world out there. Make sure you talk of ways of improving your skills while you were unemployed...But if you LIE on your resume, there will be consequences..either not ever getting a job, or if you get one, they can sue you if they find out later for misrepresentation and they will certainly fire you....Show more

Nannie Kasee: Yes, because all employers check is references anyway. They don't check employment history.
