Elvin Mannheimer: Reagan had nothing to do with mental institutions. State governments ran those facilities. States shut them down because they got tired of paying for them. Dixmont, Woodville, Mayview were in SW PA. They were closed. They are still tearing buildings down at Mayview State Hospital, near where I live.Employees at state hospitals had incentives to keep patients in hospitals. It meant work for them....Show more

Toshiko Reimers: psychologists won't help the mentally ill as much as psychiatrists. And as someone else pointed out, many mentally ill people were "dumped" from institutions because of a movement to provide for their civil rights. Insurance companies will cover what they are paid to cover. All that said, I agree with you. Most of the! mass shootings would not have happened if we had a better grip on the mental health issue. The problem is, how do we address is, what solutions are there, and what is it going to cost? We're already effectively bankrupt....Show more
Mee Blumenfeld: umm, silly ... the mental hospitals were 'shut down' because liberals found living in them to be a violation of people's right to be free. That this 'freedom' frequently involves homelessness and/or access to dangerous weapons is beside the point.after all, the Soviet Union used to send dissidents to mental hospitals because the very act of dissenting proved they were mental ill.
