will a sump pump , pump water from a creek to a garden spot?

Cordia Fivecoat: It depends on how far up the hill the garden is, and how long the hose between the creek and the garden is. Also on how much water you're planning to pump (i.e., how big the garden is). During the drought years in California in the late 1980's, I used to save our shower water in the bath tub, then drop a hose with a snap connector through the bathroom window to a sump pump, and pump the grey water up to our garden. It was a rise of 15-20' on a 150' run of hose, and the pump never had a problem, or even seemed to strain. It would pump 10" of bath water up the hill in about 8 minutes. If you have a larger rise and a longer run of hose, the pump will have to work that much harder, and if you're running it for an hour or more at a time to move a lot of water, it will eventually wear out. I was actually quite impressed by the ability of a sump pump to move water uphill so efficiently....Show more

Nikita Schroepfer: Sure it will work, but I think I w! ould find a utility pump that was made to run underwater and not be bothered by solids. You will need a workhorse if you have any long uphill runs. Check Little Giant. They make a good pump for that sort of thing.

Zelma Casebier: I have no idea but I wouldnt use it for that. ITs not made for it.

Clemmie Burkleo: Sure it will work. But pumps have a limit on how far uphill (vertical ft) they can pump. They can pump very far horizontally, but lose volume quickly when going uphill.

Mickey Isle: I see no reason not. But left unattended the unit maybe seeing its day;. The pump with over heating with a constant function setting and burn the motor out. Their used for 1 big job or an even over all usage. It may get hot and burn-up. Cant you use another pump device rather a sump pump

Torri Tippey: If the pump is properly sized and the discharge hose isn't too long it should work. Some are capable of pumping large quantities for quite a distance. Plumbers oft! en use a small unit to clear water from ruptured pipes so they! can work in the area to make repairs. One such unit can be powered by the battery of a truck and is capable of pumping 1000 gallons per hour, uphill, for a distance of over 50 feet of total rise through a 2 inch hose. However, you need to check your local regulations before doing so as it may be illegal to remove water from a public source. Removing a small amount isn't usually a concern but removing large quantities can be. I had a project once where we had to install an underground tank in a wet area. We used a well point system and, when it was turned on, it quickly drained a nearby creek resulting in the loss of life to many fish in the creek. It is unlikely your pump would be capable of doing this but, in the name of safety for our fellow planet Earth dwellers, please keep an eye on the effect you create by utilizing the creek as a water source.Good luck and enjoy!...Show more
